DAY 86: Playwright David Henry Hwang
David Henry Hwang has definitely, definitively, got the right stuff... 3 OBIEs, 1 TONY + 2 nominations, 3 Pulitzer Prize nominations, a Drama Desk + 3 nominations, an Outer Critics... we could go on here for a while... but we don't have to - it's evident all that recognition adds up to AWESOME. This guy is THE guy who brought us M. BUTTERFLY, GOLDEN CHILD, YELLOW FACE, CHINGLISH... and again... we COULD go on... but that little sampling of his works might give you an idea. Then there are his MUSICALS!... D.H.H. re-wrote the book of FLOWER DRUM SONG (and turned it into a great success), co-wrote the book for Elton John & Tim Rice's AIDA, and wrote the book for Disney's TARZAN. In addition to his plays and musicals, he's currently America's most-produced living opera librettist, including AINADAMAR (which won TWO Grammy Awards).
SOME folks might rest on their laurels at this point... but NOT David. He's got an amazing show up RIGHT NOW at Signature Theatre Company - KUNG FU - originally scheduled to close on March 16 is STILL playing, due to multiple (& well-deserved) extensions. Get your tix now, 'cause it's only running 'til April 6.
AND, since an incredibly choreographed blend of martial arts, dance, and even Chinese opera featuring the story of BRUCE LEE isn't enough to keep this guy busy... he ALSO served as mentor to Lina Patel for the Mentor Project production of THE RAGGED CLAWS
Blown away? We are. Take a second (okay... more like 30) to view the video he sent us in celebration of our 90th. ♥
