Celebrating Black Playwrights
Our Celebrating Black Playwrights program offers both established and emerging minority writers the resources and time to develop new work. With this program, we challenge popular prescriptions of what culturally specific theater should be by harvesting fresh, challenging, forward-thinking plays written by today's emerging crop of new black playwrights. Productions have included works by Pultizer award-winners Suzan-Lori Parks and Margo Jefferson, as well as the New York premiere of Renita Martin’s Five Bottles in a Six Pack.
Celebrating Black Playwrights also increases the diversity of our audiences and enlarges their understanding of the ideas, hopes and frustrations that our writers bring to light. Our artists gain wide visibility, as well as artistic and professional growth.
